Solar America Cities

The Ann Arbor Solar America Cities program works to integrate solar technologies into city energy planning, zoning and facilities, to streamline city-level regulations and practices that affect solar adoption by residents and local businesses, and to promote solar technology among residents and local businesses.

Solar America Cities: CEC and the City of Ann Arbor

CEC and the City of Ann Arbor have partnered to successfully implement Solar America Cities.  Ann Arbor was awarded a Solar America Cities award from the U.S. Department of Energy on June 20, 2007 - one of thirteen U.S. cities to receive the first round of awards.  Solar Cities is an activity of the Solar America Initiative with the goal of making solar electricity from photovoltaic (PV) technologies cost-competitive with conventionally-delivered electricity by 2015.  The $632,000, two-year project was kicked off on October 29, 2007.

Implementation

Through extensive market research completed for the City of Ann Arbor Solar Plan, a number of barriers to reaching the City's solar energy goals were identified. Within this program, the XSeed Energy project was initiated to address the main barriers to increasing the use of solar energy in Ann Arbor.
