Clean Energy Communities is currently working with local governments in nine Michigan cities to establish revolving energy funds as a way to support ongoing and future clean energy programs. A small amount of seed money is used to establish the revolving fund, which can be initiated with grant funding. Local governments invest the seed money in energy efficiency and renewable energy projects in their municipal facilities then set aside the energy savings generated in the revolving fund. Local governments use the fund to finance additional energy projects, which in turn funnel additional energy savings back into the fund.
With revolving energy funds, local leaders are investing in their cities’ infrastructure, preserving and improving it while ensuring it continues to cost effectively meet the needs of the community for decades.
Clean Energy Coalition has partnered with the University of Michigan’s Erb Institute for Global Sustainable Enterprise to develop a financial model to predict a fund’s performance. Using this unique model, Clean Energy Communities can guide local governments in prioritizing their energy efficiency investments for the best return and long-term revolving energy fund performance.
Clean Energy Coalition is establishing revolving energy funds as part of its Cities of Promise program.
