Ann Arbor Mayor John Hieftje and Others Gather to Celebrate City’s New Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

June 20, 2012

Members of the Ann Arbor community  joined Clean Energy Coalition, Ann Arbor DDA and Mayor John Hieftje at the June 19 grand opening event celebrating the installation of electric vehicle charging stations in parking facilities throughout downtown Ann Arbor.

Interest in electric vehicles is growing rapidly, but one of the largest concerns is the ability to charge them. Now, with the help of Clean Energy Coalition, the Ann Arbor DDA can say, “We will be ready for you when you are ready for an electric car.”

The 18 Clipper Creek electric vehicle charging stations have been installed at six different locations throughout downtown. Charging-friendly parking options will be attractive to downtown residents, commuters who work in or near the downtown area, and electric vehicle owners driving into Ann Arbor to enjoy its many amenities. These parking garages are located at:

  • Forest Avenue
  • Maynard Street
  • Fourth Avenue and William Street
  • Ann and Ashley Streets
  • Fourth Avenue and Catherine Street
  • The new Library Lane Parking Structure opening July 12.

The public can access the charging stations free of charge; EV owners need only pay the usual parking fees.

In addition to Mayor Hieftje, speakers at the grand opening event included Ann Arbor DDA Executive Director Susan Pollay, Clean Energy Coalition Executive Director Sean Reed, Charles Griffith of Ecology Center, Andy Lebarre of Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Regional Chamber, and Dave Konkle of Ann Arbor DDA.

A U.S. Department of Energy Clean Cities Recovery Act grant awarded through Clean Energy Coalition funded this project. Through these installations, the DDA continues to encourage a variety of downtown transportation choices, maintain Ann Arbor’s position as a leader in sustainability, and help the city meet its emission reduction goals.

The project was covered by AnnArbor.comConcentrate, and Ann Arbor Journal.
