Clean Energy Coalition: 'Plugging Renewable Energy into the Rust Belt,' via The New York Times
In 2010, Clean Energy Coalition launched Cities of Promise through a $4.4 million grant awarded by the Michigan Public Service Commission. Through this project, Clean Energy Communities is specifically focusing on energy efficiency and renewable energy installations in eight Michigan cities in need of critical redevelopment. To maximize the investments in each community, CEC has created a revolving energy fund to invest in future clean energy projects.
Rich LaBombard, engineering assistant for the city of Saginaw, told the New York Times that the changes will save the city nearly $80,000 per year, and that if "it wasn't for the Clean Energy Coalition, we sure wouldn't be doing that." Read the full article here.
Wright & Filippis Eliminates 931,200 Pounds of CO2
Through the Michigan Green Fleets project, Clean Energy Mobility is working with Wright & Filippis to overhaul 25 percent of the company’s Michigan-based fleet to run on clean propane autogas. The program converted Ford vehicles using technology created by ROUSH CleanTech, a Michigan company.
Together, the two companies and Clean Energy Mobility have converged to create local jobs demonstrating the true spirit of the Recovery Act, which is funding the conversion. Plus, Wright & Filippis has improved the environment by deploying vehicles that run on clean, domestic-based fuel: a win-win for Michigan!
Consider the positive implications:
-
48,000 fewer gallons of gasoline burned by switching to propane fuel
-
931,200 pounds of carbon dioxide eliminated from Wright & Filippis’ carbon footprint each year
-
$3,000 per vehicle, per year operations savings equaling $36,000 total for 12 propane vehicles
Clean Energy Coalition Welcomes Two Team Members
Clean Energy Coalition is proud to welcome our two newest team members. Laura Palombi works as a project manager to advance alternative fuel infrastructure and advanced vehicle technologies through Clean Energy Mobility. Prior to her work as project manager, Ms. Palombi served as an intern at Shepherd Advisors Consulting, where she wrote a market briefing on the photovoltaic solar panel industry in support of the firm’s strategic goals to attract clients in the clean-tech manufacturing sector. She also worked as a program development intern for the City of Ann Arbor’s Energy Office and as the associate curator of invertebrates at the Detroit Zoological Society, where she established Michigan’s first captive rearing program for a federally endangered butterfly.
Ms. Palombi earned a bachelor's degree in environmental science and a master's degree in entomology (with high honors) from Michigan State University. As a dual-degree student at the University of Michigan’s Erb Institute for Global Sustainable Enterprise, Ms. Palombi earned a master of business administration from the Stephen M. Ross School of Business and a master of science from the School of Natural Resources and Environment. Additionally, Ms. Palombi studied abroad in Nepal, Costa Rica and Canada.
As project manager for Clean Energy Communities, Rebecca Filbey supports Michigan’s Cities of Promise through revitalization efforts that specifically focus on clean energy projects. Prior to her work with Clean Energy Coalition, Ms. Filbey was the climate change program manager for the British Council USA, where she created, developed and managed the U.S. component of the International Climate Champions, a 60-country initiative that engaged young people in communicating about climate change. Additionally, Ms. Filbey was the manager for external affairs in the funding division of Conservation International, and an account manager at Stanton Communications in Washington, D.C. where she provided strategic communications support to clients ranging from electric utilities to nonprofits.
Ms. Filbey has a bachelor’s degree in biology (with honors) from Wake Forest University, a master of studies in modern history from St. Peter’s College at Oxford University and a master of science in environmental sustainability (with distinction) from the University of Edinburgh. |
